Economics journalism club

The Economic Journalism Club’s (EJC) monthly event was first held this year on January 22, 2013 at the Press Institute (PI), supported by USAID/BPI (Business Plus Initiative). The topic of the meeting was: “What’s the economic impact if right hand drive (RHD) vehicle imports are banned?” Panelists included Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center director Mr. B.Lakshmi, Customs General Administration (Legal Division) state senior inspector Mr. Ch.Tamir and Mongolian Logistics Association executive director Mr. B.Batnasan.

2. Starting from 2013, the EJC has planned to have its own brand meeting to enhance public debate on urgent issues of economic development in Mongolia through top-quality discussion events organized by EJC members. In order to organize this meeting, the EJC also wants to organize pre-event training and information sessions on selected topics to provide EJC members with an opportunity to exchange existing knowledge and information, and understand detailed background information and assess the current knowledge gap among journalists and the public. The topic for the January meeting was Chinggis bonds and the EJC invited Asia Development Bank (ADB) economist L. Amar and Trade Development Bank (TDB) executive director of the international banking department B. Erkhembayar.

3. A second session for EJC members (run by the ADB) was held on February 19, 2013 on the topic: “Turning the ‘Natural Resource Curse’ into a Blessing.” Senior economist Yan Hansen and economist L. Amar taught the group about the economic principles and signs of the ‘Holland disease’

4. Another panel discussion was held on February 27, 2013, titled: “How to facilitate new electricity connections.” Panelists included Ministry of Electricity, Department of Energy Policy director Mr. Sh. Ganzorig, a Ministry of Electricity, Department of Energy Policy specialist, Ulaanbaatar Electricity Distribution Network chief of procedure Mr. Munkhjargal and Ulaanbaatar Electricity Distribution Network representative Mr. B. Bolortsog.

5. The EJC organized its first ever brand meeting – “Background of development’’ – on March 22, 2013 with Mongolian Minister of Finance Mr. Ch. Ulaan. This time the topic was: “Distribution of sovereign wealth funds and spending of bond income.’’ The EJC is planning to continue organizing these brand meetings often by inviting people who have political, social and economic backgrounds.
